Ten Tips for Sustainable Dog Parenting: Reduce Your Furry Friend's Carbon Pawprint

Helen Rushton|

As eco-conscious individuals, it's important to try and extend our sustainable practices to every aspect of our lives - including pet ownership

Being an eco-friendly dog owner not only benefits the environment but also promotes the well-being of our furry companions. Even if you only manage to adopt one or two of the tips below you'll be able to reduce your dog's carbon pawprint!

TIP ONE 💩💩💩 Opt for Eco-Friendly Waste Management:

One of the most significant contributions you can make as an eco-friendly dog owner is proper waste management. BUT, it's a complete conundrum trying to work out the most effective eco friendly way to dispose of poop! You can make a great start by choosing biodegradable 💩 bags (made from cornstarch so no nasty microplastics get into the environment) or explore composting options to reduce the environmental impact of your dog's waste. You'll be able to find lots more ideas and information on this subject through the blog as time goes on!

TIP TWO 🎋🎋🎋 Choose Sustainable and Non-Toxic Products:

When it comes to dog toys, accessories, and grooming products, opt for sustainable and non-toxic options. Look for toys made from recycled materials, collars and leashes crafted from eco-friendly materials like hemp or organic cotton, and grooming products free from harmful chemicals.

TIP THREE 🪲🦗🪲 Embrace Sustainable Feeding:

Consider sustainable feeding practices for your dog by opting for natural and organic dog food options. Look for brands that prioritise sustainable ingredients, ethical sourcing, and minimal packaging. Consider homemade treats using locally sourced and organic ingredients, reducing carbon emissions associated with pet food production.

We all know that changing your pup's eating regime can be a minefield in itself so make sure any changes you make are introduced slowly and keep an eye on your dog's health throughout the change.

I am very much of the opinion that RAW isn't always best, we've tried for years to find an affordable option for Mash that doesn't come with oodles of plastic packaging, we've not yet found the perfect solution so continue to feed Eden kibble (if you haven't heard of Eden, check them out here)

TIP FOUR ♻️♻️♻️ Reduce Plastic Waste:

Plastic waste is a significant environmental concern. Minimise your dog's plastic consumption by using stainless steel or ceramic food and water bowls instead of plastic ones. Explore sustainable alternatives to plastic waste bags, such as biodegradable or compostable options and wherever possible look for brands who package treats and food in biodegradable packaging (like us!)

If you do need to purchase dog products wrapped in plastic, make sure you recycle where you can

TIP FIVE 💧💧💧 Adopt Sustainable Grooming Habits:

Use eco-friendly grooming practices by choosing natural and biodegradable shampoos and conditioners for your furry friend. Reduce water consumption by using dry shampoos or water-saving techniques during baths. Explore eco-friendly alternatives to disposable grooming wipes.

TIP SIX 📍📍📍 Support Local and Sustainable Brands:

When purchasing dog products, support local and sustainable brands that prioritise eco-friendly practices. Fortunately there are more and more sustainable dog brands emerging nowadays so look for certifications such as organic, fair-trade, or cruelty-free to ensure you're making environmentally responsible choices. If you're struggling, wander through our shop to see the brands we have looked into and recommend

TIP SEVEN 💡💡💡 Practice Energy Efficiency:

Promote energy efficiency in your dog's daily routine. Opt for LED or energy-efficient lighting in your home, use eco-friendly dog bed options made from recycled materials, and minimise electricity consumption by turning off unnecessary appliances when not in use - whilst we all agree it's great to leave a TV or radio on for your dog when you're out the radio will use far less energy!

TIP EIGHT 🦟🦟🦟 Choose Natural Pest Control:

Instead of chemical-based pest control, consider natural alternatives for flea and tick prevention. Explore natural remedies, herbal collars, or consult with your veterinarian for eco-friendly solutions that are safe for your dog and the environment. We regularly use hairy rabbit ears (🤢) as a natural wormer and a natural flea and tick spray allowing us to reduce the amount of vet prescribed prevention methods

TIP NINE 🚃 Promote Sustainable Travel:

We know that your local every day walks don't always cut the mustard and sometimes you feel the need for adventure! When traveling with your dog, choose eco-friendly transportation options whenever possible. Carpool, use public transportation, or explore dog-friendly destinations closer to home to reduce carbon emissions. Pack sustainably, bringing reusable food and water containers for your pet (& you!)
